A HISTORY OF HOFFMAN'S STORE IN HERITAGE PERTH

In May of 1928, the late David Hoffman moved to Perth with his family and opened a general merchandise store, selling footwear, ladies and mens wear, dry goods, work clothing and floor coverings. In these early years, David's wife Rebecca doubled as housewife and sales person, while the eldest son Israel helped in the store after school. In the fall of 1942, Glidden Paints were added to the inventory

David's two other sons, Joe and Eli, helped after school, and joined the firm full-time upon graduation from the Perth Collegiate High School. Both Israel and Joe served in the R.C.A.F. during World War II. After the War, Israel left for University, and Joe returned to the business. In 1947, a partnership was formed between David and Joe Hoffman and the store was now called D. Hoffman & Son. David Hoffman, the founder of the business, died in October of 1956, and the firm continued in business with his widow Rebecca Hoffman, together with sons Joe and Eli. Over the years, the sale of floor coverings grew steadily, and in 1966, carpets were stocked. In 1970, a 3000 sq ft. addition was constructed to the back of the existing store. In 1975 a further 2000
sq ft. building was added to accommodate new, large carpet rolls.

In 1984, Rebecca Hoffman retired and Eli Hoffman and Joe Hoffman formed a partnership, with the business now called D. Hoffman & Sons Inc.. Just recently, hardwood flooring and Formica laminated flooring were added. Hoffman's are soon approaching 75 years of service to Perth and district areas.
